The game
What is football?
4 min
Football (soccer) is a game between two teams of eleven players each. The goal is simple: put the ball into the opponent's net more times than they put it into yours. Whichever team has scored more goals when time runs out wins — and unlike basketball, the match can simply end level.
The basic idea
Each team attacks one goal and defends the other. When your team has the ball you are attacking and trying to create a chance; the moment you lose it, you are defending. Players move the ball mostly with their feet — passing, dribbling and shooting — and only the goalkeeper may handle it, and only inside their own penalty area.
How you win — or draw
The team with more goals at the final whistle wins. If the score is level, a league match is recorded as a draw and that is the final result; nobody plays on. (In knockout competitions a tie may go to extra time and penalties — covered in the betting track.) The draw being a real third outcome is one of the biggest differences from basketball, and it shapes every football market.
Why it matters for predictions
Almost everything FinalSkore models for football — expected goals, who is likely to win, how many goals total — comes back to these basics: chances created, chances conceded, and the fact that a goal is a rare, decisive event. Understanding the game itself makes every stat and every prediction easier to read.
